The History Highway: A Guide to Internet Resources
Published in Hardcover by M.E.Sharpe (January, 1997)
Authors: Dennis A. Trinkle, Dorothy Auchter, Scott A. Merriman, and Todd E. Larson
Average review score:

if the journey to knowledge begins with just a single, small step, here's a stepping stone to the "new literacy"
College leaders would do well to ensure that a copy of young Professor Trinkle's "The History Highway" is on the desktop of each faculty member, and then interview him or her a month later on what they discovered when navigating around the "new literacy". In pointed contrast, I remember too well a much older and "very retiring" professor at a highly ranked college recently insisting that "this Pen is My computer".
A journey through knowledge begins with but a single, small step --as ancient seers would remind us. "The History Highway" offers anyone (older or young) a "roadmap" to their own choice of any of 2000 or so stepping off points. For example, "images taken from the Bayeaux Tapestry [embroidery 230 feet long; the original story document presented to an illiterate population] make this a visually appealing and useful site (Norman Invasion of England, 1066)". But wait, there's more: "Periodic updates to the text are available online."
Our new digital lifestyle can (will?) transform Academia "before you can say Great Scott!" Or at least, for certain, a lot more quickly than the Gutenberg effect transformed schooling and culture.

An invaluable resource for students, teachers & researchers.
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, The History Highway 2000: A Guide To Internet Resources continues to provide the most extensive and reliable coverage available. Reflecting the swift growth of the Internet, featured are more than twice as many entries (2,500) and many new sections (Australian, New Zealand, Greek, Western History, Agricultural History, Rural Studies, Psychohistory, Historiography, Historical Population Databases, and Historical Book Dealers. The History Highway 2000 is further enhanced with a detailed cross-index offering instant access to every subject and every entry; an expanded glossary of multimedia and web-format terms; as well as periodic updates to the text which are available online. The History Highway 2000 is an invaluable, highly recommended resource for history students, teachers, researchers, librarians, authors, and the general public.

The History Student's New Best Friend
If you are at all interested in history, this book is indispensable. It offers an exhaustive guide to the reliable and worthwhile historical materials available on the Internet. The entries have been sifted by an international team of subject experts, and there is a resource mentioned for every lover or student of history.

Everyone who has ever stared in awe at a search engine result listing 1 million hits on some subject owes Drs. Trinkle and Merriman a debt of gratitude. This book will take you to the materials you really want to use or explore. It is not only worth the time and money you will invest--it will save you time and pay handsome dividends.

What else can one say--it is this history student's new best friend.

How to Do Everything with Your iMac

MacHome Journal's HotTips Book Of The Month Oct/2000
Selected by MacHome's free eZine, HotTips Weekly

Book of the month for October 2000.

Of the plethora of iMac books released since the computer's inception, I found this the clearest and most comprehensive. I like the "DO" angle, as opposed to providing an endless list of technical information. It may not be the best choice for a power-user in a quest for in-depth geektech info (well... You should have the AppleSource CDs if you are a Mac professionnal!), but every beginner and newcomer would benefit from owning a copy.

To subscribe to HotTips:

This Book Is All You Need!
This is the ONLY book that any IMac person will ever need. I purchased four other IMac books before this one and only wished that I would've seen this one first. It has everything that you will ever want to know. It is well laid out and very easy to find whatever concerns that you might have in relation to the IMac. Good also for either beginners or long time owners of the beloved IMac.

Excellent, comprehensive manual for any iMac user
I recently travelled back to the US to help my Dad get set-up with an iMac. While he loved the simplicity of the system, he did miss not having printed material to ponder (and no amount of "but we're saving the trees" would suffice). After an hour pouring over iMac books at Borders we chose this one (of course it's cheaper here!) because of it's thouroghness in covering the additional software included with the iMac. It has the best, most complete coverage of AppleWorks and Quicken of any book out there, as well as complete system coverage, setup information and and how to use the Internet with Navigator. I went back to Holland knowing my Dad can now figure anything out...excellent reference, buy this one!

Lights-Out Putting : A Mind, Body, and Soul Approach to Golf's Game Within the Game
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 June, 2000)
Authors: Todd Sones and David Denunzio
Average review score:

Good, basic guide to putting
Does a good job of covering both mechanics and psychology of putting. Touches on a lot of aspects of putting that other books don't, or maybe I should say that the way in which the author discusses subjects such as ball position, alignment, etc. is better at anticipating problems average golfers encounter when trying to follow the standard advice than many other books I have read.

I had bought Dave Pelz' Putting Bible earlier, thinking that would be the only book I would ever have to buy on putting, but was quite disappointed in the approach of that book. Sone's book gives much more useful information.

At the same time, it is a concise, quick read, and is arranged in a way that makes it easy to go back to certain chapters at a later date for a refresher.

Highly reccommended.

Putting is an arm stroke not a pendulum or shoulder stroke.
I have studied putting books for many years. I have been searching for a putting method that makes sense and works.I'm giving copies of the book to my friends and recommending it to anyone who wants to listen to me.

I'm glad I bought it
I've only read and practiced the advice in the first three chapters, but I've already seen improvement in my putting. Having confidence in my setup does seem to produce results.

Todd Sones' advice to position your hand underneath your shoulder appears to work best if you have a straight arm without an elbow. If you have an elbow, the arm's center of mass seems to force the hand slightly ahead of the shoulder, if you let the arm hang naturally.

Also, the front-view photos of different grips on page 18 aren't sufficient to understand what the text refers to.

But these are quibbles that don't prevent this book from getting five stars from me.

Love of Goldens
Published in Hardcover by Voyageur Press (January, 2002)
Authors: Todd R. Berger, Alan Carey, Sandy Carey, and Roger Caras
Average review score:

OMG! A Golden book!
Well, as the title tells you, this book is a goldne book, and a golden's book. This was the first item that i bought from amazon.com and it is the reason why I contunie on buying things. Basicly, it is one of the best books I own.
For the first thing, it includes first quality golden retriever photos, very cute! You witness the miracles of goldens throughout this book.
HOWEVER!, this book DOES NOT include how to take care of your beatiful golden. You may need another book to guide you and help you with the topics of health, training and history of golden retrievers.
I can call this book a "reference" book, it is really valuable and a must-own for both poeple who own goldens and who don't. If you like photography and animals, and art-- this book is for you.

A Golden Book!
This book is a treasure! Especially if you have Golden Retrievers. It is mostly photos but it does include inspirational, and interesting stories about the breed. The photos feature goldens of all ages, shades, and sizes. They are featured in snow, on swings, in beds and on the laps of their owners. Each dog feautred is beautiful. The author Dean Koontz even provides a photo of his own dog, and a chapter from one of his books, in which the main character is a Golden Retriever. I highly reccomend this book.

Love of Goldens
This is one of the best books I have ever purchased, initially as a gift for my veterenarian after the delivery of my first litter of goldens, and again as a keepsake for our family. Fabulous photos, treasured memories on each page, tons of inspiration and a tribute to a fine breed. A book that is ideal for the coffee table however, as opposed to a reference guide.

Lunchtime Walks in Downtown San Francisco
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (November, 1998)
Author: Gail Todd
Average review score:

Fun for Residents and Tourists Alike
I would make one small addition to the other reviews. Lunchtime Walks in San Francisco, Gail Todd, is as useful for tourists as is it for residents! It became a permanent addition to our library after we were able to flip through a copy at the Rand McNally Store in San Francisco. For those not having the opportunity to peek first, this is a wonderful resource for trip planning. The walks aren't too long (about an hour for most), are centrally located, and a handy map is included with each. Information is provided on the history and the architecture of the area, shops, restaurants, picnic areas (yes, even in San Francisco there are areas for relaxing and enjoying your lunch in the great outdoors), and gorgeous views. Perfect for the visitor wanting to take some delightful jaunts including the 'must see' sites in a city that is made for walking. We've already book marked several of the 33 walks for our next visit to the city by the bay.

If you live in San Francisco, BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!
Now that Spring is here, Gail Todd's walking guide to San Francisco is indispensible for anyone living in the City and looking for a new way to explore it. Beautiful pictures, detailed maps, tons of great ideas for lunchtime walks -- this guide has it all.

You'll See The City With New Eyes
As a 20-year resident of San Francisco, I'm pretty jaded when it comes to guidebooks about my city, but this book is a real treat! The author's fresh approach and clear, concise information makes this book a pleasure to read. Buy two and give one to a friend.

Riot in the Charm Factory
Published in Paperback by Soft Skull Pr (15 October, 1999)
Author: Todd Colby
Average review score:

two hours with it
two hours with it, the very first ones, condensed for me a screen around my head which became a lantern of mild temper.. different pieces of abnormal rules made my spirit high in form and flavor and hot and off the record of any loud speaker.. I recognized the best of my bad acts through the hold of this poets tax on my chemical tartar... and my routine was instantly renewed with romance... all in two hours... I've been reading his work for years.. Riots flavored the Hades in my mind... and the Charm no doubt will continue...

The Real Thing
Todd Colby is writing some of the best poetry and prose anywhere. Imagine William S. Burroughs' decadence and experimentation mixed with Gertrude Stein's mighty ear and you have an approximation of what Mr. Colby is up to in Riot in the Charm Factory. This is darn good stuff.

charming riot
Todd Colby does more than rock, he writes. This book is more fun than most things I find myself reading in bed. "The Boy And The Girl" made me feel as happy as I used to reading Acker, while "Ken And Kathy" is like Gertrude Stein coming back to toss toddlers like footballs yelling strike all over yum yum yuppies. Shades of a more visceral Rimbaud run focused throughout, but mostly Mr. Colby makes everything his own particular joy he wants to give. Other highlights include his takes on the work place ("Gotham Selectric Miniatures," "Captain's Log). After reading this book I not only want to be his neighbor but son in my next life.

Innuendo: A Todd Mills Mystery
Published in Paperback by Dell Books (Paperbacks) (07 November, 2000)
Author: R. D. Zimmerman
Average review score:

A story about love and trust wrapped up in a murder mystery
Superb writing and plot development as well as characterization. Then why not 5 stars? Maybe I'm being too snooty about my stars, but I have to reserve them for something truly wonderful, and there are just a couple hitches with this book.

But that by no means should dissuade you from reading it. Zimmerman is a superb writer and crafter of detail. And while this book may be filed in the murder mystery section, it is more about love, trust and fidelity than it is about who done it.

No finer work have I read that delves into the issues of what makes relationships work, and the rocky road that Todd Mills and Steve Rawlins travel is realistically and lovingly portrayed.

Like any true murder mystery, we have a dead body by the second page. And we know that something is afoot by the end of the first chapter. If you have ever struggled through issues of fidelity and trust in your relationship, you will read nothing truer than the doubt and tricks the mind plays Zimmerman pens in these pages. And there's an excellent murder mystery mixed in to boot.

So why just four instead of five stars? Without giving it all away, let's just say I think Zimmerman didn't tie up all the loose ends as neatly as he should have. There is still one thing left unexplained, significant in my view. And the other problem is mere careless editing I think. And that is when we read the first chapter from Todd's point of view, we realize he is curious about Tim Chase: is the actor gay or straight? Good enough. But then we get to the chapter about Tim Chase and we get the same unnecessary information, or rather, the question is posed in a very bothersome and redundant manner. Minor yes, but with a writer of Zimmerman's caliber, I think he should have caught that.

Better than following the news of Tom & Nicole!
I simply couldn't read this book fast enough! It was pure fun and kept me guessing from page to page. And oh so current ... involves a plot with an arranged Hollywood marriage involving America's biggest box office stud and his lovely actress wife. Much more interesting than today's National Enquirer headlines and ten times more fun to read. (And the TV reporter and his hunky detective partner are the stuff dreams are made of!) Read it today!

Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story!
I have read nearly all of Zimmerman's books. I am a TV Anchor/reporter, who happens to be gay. I can't put any of Zimmerman's books down! They are a fantastic read! I recommend you not read this book in bed when you know you have to get up early. At the end of each chapter you are always saying, "oh, I'll just read one more chapter, and then I'll go to sleep." Please. Pretty soon it'll be time to get up. The book IS that good!

My biggest complaint is that Zimmerman is inaccurate when it comes to how things work in the TV business. I've done it all... from floor directing... to producing... to what I'm currently doing, Anchoring in Market 5, San Francisco for the last 12 years. TV news veterans will quickly see that Zimmerman tried to understand the TV business, but didn't completly get it. Especially when it comes to tv terminology. For example, never in my life, nor in the lives of my fellow journalists (who also can't put the book down) has any reporter done a VOSOT in 20 seconds, as was the case in INNUENDO. Not that it's impossible, just ridiculous. (You tv folks will know what I mean) There are a few other cases, but you get my drift.

But if you're not a TV News person like myself, you will find this book and all his others facinating reads! Don't NOT buy the book. Just don't believe every word he has to say about the TV business. Listen to me rant and rave. I'm a TV reporter for God's sake. Who believes us anyway.

Love of Labs: The Ultimate Tribute to Labrador Retrievers
Published in Paperback by Voyageur Press (January, 2002)
Authors: Todd R. Berger and Bill Tarrant
Average review score:

Good story book, beautiful photos
This is a story book. The stories narrated in the book show the really nice characteristics of this excellent dogs. The photographs are beautiful. It's a nice tribute to the Labrador. Only downside is that all, and I do mean all, the stories are hunting stories. I believe these dogs have much more to say in other aspects of life. For all of you who hunt with a Lab, you will really love this book. Those of you who don't hunt but are really fond to this breed, you will like it very much, myself included. For those of you looking for information on the breed, not recomended.

A lab is pure love
I have only had the priviledge of owning our adopted black lab, Abbott (rescued by Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue) for about 4 months. I can not tell you how incredible these dogs are!! The family loyalty is palpable. The intense devotion these dogs display to their family is remarkable. The absolute joy this dog has brought to us is a gift that is compounded daily. How can one really describe a lab's love for their family? (and the family for them) I was so happy to see a book that comes close to trying to express this.

Quite simply, the stories and pictures are beautiful. Share this book with anyone that loves these dogs for it is a pure delight just to turn the pages and look at the pictures! We feel so lucky to live with the real thing!

Love of Labs
This book allows you to be inside the labs heart. I purchased this book 2 1/2 years ago after I purchased my first chocolate lab. I read this book in one sitting and realizing that I wanted more. I wanted to understand why they stand by us, as our protector and our best friend. As lab owners we are the lucky ones. Tears and laughter filled my heart the day I read this book. I now have two chocolate labs and they are first on my list. The sense of giving they have is unbelievable. One of my favorite stories was "All Ghosts Aren't White". This story taught me that even dogs need to escape the real world and find a favorite place to retire and relax. As my two labs follow me everywhere, the amount of love that is between us is priceless and I would not trade this for anything in this world. Some people in this world say as lab lovers we love our dogs too much, they are only dogs. Well, for all LAB LOVERS, you are the best! and for those who do not understand, buy this book and realize that a lab may show you how to love and help you find it. We need more books like this.

The Market Gurus: Stock Investing Strategies You Can Use From Wall Street's Best
Published in Hardcover by Dearborn Trade Publishing (March, 2002)
Authors: John Reese and Todd Glassman
Average review score:

Detailed analysis of various strategies
Confused with all the "expert" advice available on investing? Why does there seem to be so many different views and different ideas on how to best invest? Of course risk is one of the biggest factors as is how much time you are willing to put into analysis each day. Some people are comfortable with a lot of risk if the potential reward is a really large gain, others are not. Some enjoy watching the stock tape cross their computer screen all day long and watching their investments, others are to content to watch their investment progress on a monthly basis.

Reese and Glassman examine the most respected investment advisors today and detail not only their philosophy but also the level of risk the investor should be comfortable with and the level of effort the investor needs to put forth to follow that person's advice.
Each expert is analyzed one at a time including the criteria they use for investing, how they determine if a stock meets that criteria or not and examples of individual stocks with an analysis of where they pass and fail the selected criteria. The analysis is detailed and yet straight forward so that someone with minimal experience in stocks can understand the basis philosophy.

Who are these investors that are analyzed? Only the most revered names in stock investng: Peter Lynch, Benjamin Graham, William O'Neil, Warren Buffett, The Motley Fool, David Dreman, Martin Zweig, Kenneth L. Fisher, and James O'Shaughnessy.

Most of the experts selected have written their own books on how to invest. This book distills down all the fluff and long winded information in the other books to a single chapter on each advisor, a chapter with all the information required to follow that person's style. So, I guess you have a choice, buy several books and read them all or buy this one and get all the knowledge as well as a detailed step by step plan of how to follow their investing style. Complete analysis (even on those who have not written a book), risk profile information, detailed examples of how to apply the methods, and simple pass/fail criterion information, the information is complete, easy to understand and easy to apply, there is nothing not to like about this book! If you are an investor or want to try your hand at it or have a self-directed IRA or similar instrument then you owe it to yourself to read this book, select at least a style that is appropriate for you and apply it.

Great book
Great book with investment stalwarts like Fisher, Buffet, Graham. Best new financial book I've read in a while....

A "Must Have" for any Investor!!!
I've spent so much money on numerous stock investing books, hoping to learn some investing tactics...however I'm usually left feeling as if my time spent reading was a waste. There are so many financial analysts, each with their own stock investing strategies. The Market Gurus does a good job of detailing a number of prestigious analyst's strategies and has helped me develop a much clearer understanding of investing in general. I recommend this book to all interested in furthering their knowledge of the investment world.
